kW and kWh: power is not energy

Separate system power from operating time with a simple example and live calculator.

Check before deciding

Start with a real-life situation

Two devices each draw 1 kW. One runs for half an hour, the other for four hours. Their power is equal but their energy use differs. That distinction matters when selecting an inverter and a battery.

POWER × TIME = ENERGY

Preliminary calculation lab

Change power and time to explore energy demand and preliminary nominal storage.

E = P × t
C = E / (η × usable)

Assumes steady load and no solar contribution during this period. Enter supported efficiency and usable-fraction data. Initial values are teaching examples. Surge power, ageing, temperature and additional reserve are not included.

Load energy required8 kWh
Preliminary nominal battery capacity11.11 kWh

1. Power is the rate of use

Power describes energy used per unit of time. Inverter selection must consider simultaneous loads and start-up demand. Adding every appliance nameplate does not necessarily represent real or simultaneous household demand.

2. Energy accumulates over time

A steady 2 kW load over 4 hours needs 8 kWh. For variable demand, calculate separate periods or use measurements. The tool below assumes a steady load; storage and inverter losses are handled separately.

3. Panel rating is not daily yield

Module ratings refer to test conditions. Daily energy depends on irradiance, temperature, orientation, shade and losses. We do not promise yield or savings without site data. A yield study should include its model assumptions and climate inputs.

Check before deciding

  • Read each value’s unit
  • Separate simultaneous power from daily energy
  • Check steady-load and loss assumptions
